Oak Dining Table Rehab
I've always had a thing for these types of chairs. I've always thought painted they would bring out the carvings more then when they are just wood. I got lucky, right after the new year a friend of mine told me she saw an ad for this table. It was free!
When I got the table, it had lots of wear, some of the spindles were missing from the chairs. I gave it a good cleaning, and then got to work on the table top.
First I stripped the top with Citrus Gel Stripper. I let that sit for an hour, and then removed it with a plastic scraper, and then steel wool to get any last bits off.
I felt hopeful when I saw how even the color came out. I knew it had some serious use before I got to it, but nothing could have prepared me for what happened when I tried to stain it.
I've never seen such a blotchy mess. I stripped it and tried one more time, but sadly, this wood has just seen too much use. It was time for plan B.
Lately, I've been using General Finishes Milk paint, so I decided to try their dark chocolate for the top, and antique white for the base.
After painting it, I'm still not in love. Not yet anyway. After I was satisfied the color was even, I used General Finishes Satin Top Coat to give the top more durability and shine. I also gave the base some texture with a glaze. Finally guys, I was in love. Check out the end result.
It's lovely even with out the leaf. I even considered not selling it and keeping it. It was so hard to let this one go.
